Spring Cleaning for Your Health: What Are You Putting In and On Your Body?

When Dr. Eddie and I took a natural childbirth class over 20 years ago in preparation for the birth of our first child, we were introduced to a concept that has stayed with me ever since: informed consent. It was taught using the BRAIN acronym, a simple yet powerful tool to help evaluate medical decisions:

  • B – Benefits

  • R – Risks

  • A – Alternatives

  • I – Intuition

  • N – Do Nothing

I have shared this concept with many people over the years, including my own children. Recently, it came up again when our 19-year-old daughter was hospitalized for 10 days. As a legal adult, she had to provide consent for her own medical procedures. Her doctor carefully explained the benefits and risks of one particular procedure, and I reminded her that she could always say, “I would like more time to think about it.” This allows you to process all of the information and not make a rushed decision.

During her hospital stay, we also had many discussions about the side effects of medications and procedures. While the medications she received were life-saving, she quickly learned that each one came with benefits, risks, and potential side effects.

Spring: A Time to Reevaluate What We Put in Our Bodies

This experience reminded me of an eye-opening message I once saw on the back of a t-shirt: “I take Aspirin for the headache caused by the Zyrtec I take for the hay fever I got from the Relenza I take for the uneasy stomach from the Ritalin I take for the short attention span caused by the Scopolamine I take for the motion sickness I got from the Lomotil I take for the diarrhea caused by the Orlistat I take for the uncontrolled weight gain from the Paxil I take for the anxiety from the Zocor I take for my high cholesterol... because exercise, a good diet, and regular chiropractic care are just too much trouble.”

While this statement is humorous, it carries an important truth—many people fall into the cycle of treating symptoms with medications that often lead to more complications, requiring additional medications. It becomes an endless loop, where the root cause of the problem is rarely addressed.

The Risks of a Medication-Driven Approach

Pharmaceuticals certainly have their place in healthcare, but they should not be the only approach to health and wellness. Many medications come with a long list of potential side effects, some of which can be worse than the condition they are intended to treat.

For example:

  • Pain relievers can cause liver damage, stomach ulcers, and dependency.

  • Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and mood swings.

  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs may cause muscle pain, memory loss, and liver damage.

Instead of relying on a prescription-first mindset, we should take a step back and ask ourselves: Are there natural, less invasive ways to address our health concerns?
